At the end of the 19th Century, as the country was rapidly changing from a rural to an urban society, people yearned to return to more open country and breathe the fresh air to which they were accustomed. The game of golf had been around in some form for centuries, but it was the perfect time for it to become popular among the affluent in the United States.
